Hey everyone. My name is Jonny and I run a little blog based out of South Carolina by the name of Cassette Rewind. I’m fairly new to the community, having only started back in March, but so far it’s been an incredibly worthwhile experience. Huge shout out to the people here at Hearing Gold for always being so rad and letting people like me come on their site and do this kind of thing.
I’ve always had a passion for writing & music and after following blogs like Hearing Gold, yvynyl, & Perfect Midnight World on my personal Tumblr for about half a year, I decided that I’d try to create a music blog of my own so that I could have a place to sort of ramble and introduce my friends and others to artists that I felt deserved to be heard. Surprisingly things have been going fairly well on my side so I guess that’s why I’m here making this guest post. These few tracks are an example of what I like to call ear magic and they’re a small reflection of what you’d find over at Cassette Rewind. I didn’t mean to make this intro so lengthy but now that I’m done let’s get to the tunes.
Dan Bombard, the man behind the funky grooves of Dinosaurus Rex, never ceases to amaze me and the track “My Baby”is just what you need to get down no matter where you may be. I’ve been a fan ever since I first heard his Cosby Sweater LP and his latest EP The Looks is even more solid and smooth. Being someone who was born in the 90’s, I find it a bit funny that I love music that sounds like it came from the decade before but regardless, Dinosaurus Rex is always a go to artist when I feel the need to kick back and chill hard.
I recently posted this track over at CR but I can’t seem to get enough of it so I had to talk about it again. Ruddyp and Taquwami were two of the first producers that I started listening to and it’s been awesome to see their styles change and improve with time. The two artists are now a part of the label/collective Void Youth, and “Hold” showcases them collaborating for the first time. There’s no doubt about it that these guys vibe off of each other amazingly and this track is pure bliss from start to finish. Songs like this are what dreams should be made of.
I can always count on PRTLS to be on point and thanks to them I came across Worshipper. I’m a sucker for female vocals and that, along with the group’s slick sound and sexy, experimental R&B vibe has certainly made me dig their EP Happened. “Boyalty” is like a breath of fresh air and it’s been playing on repeat in my head ever since I grabbed the release over at bandcamp. It’d be a mistake not to have this in your library.
“Hair Like Alain Delon” is a part of Seventeen On The Inside, a great compilation that was put out by a small but unique fanzine called Kill People You Like and an up and coming Bay Area/Mexico City label going by TwoCarnations Records. Their motto is “true pop will find you in the end” and this track is a great representation of that statement. It comes from a project created by Jyoti Mishra that goes by the name of White Town. The song may sound simple but it’s fun and upbeat and that definitely works for White Town . If you’re in the mood for feel good indie pop then I highly recommend checking out his album Monopole and don’t forget to grab the comp either!
I don’t remember how I stumbled across the UK duo that calls themselves Yoofs but one thing’s for sure, I’m glad that I did. “Hazy Dayz” is the band’s first single & it’s a slow moving, delicately powerful track that quickly turns into a whirlwind of psychedelia and fuzz. They just released their debut EP titled We Used 2 Be Fun and it just further proves to me that their sound is one that you don’t come by often. Be sure to grab the release over at bandcamp for that magical “name your own” price.
Well, I hope you all enjoyed the ear magic. Every time I write I feel like I’m slightly rambling so I guess I’ll end this post with a thank you speech. Not really, but again, I want to thank Hearing Gold. Also shout out to all of the awesome followers that I’ve gained and all of the artists and fellow music bloggers that I’ve spoken with over the past few months who’ve made this way cooler than I originally thought it’d be. If you’re looking for chill vibes and more good music then check me out over at Cassette Rewind.
