Neighborhood Tapes is a London based music blog and mixtape haven. It was conceived a long time ago, through countless enthusiastic emails back and forth for a number of years, considering the quality of independent music, and subsequently, the state of the popular. It was officially started in late 2011 by myself, Andy Moore (Something In Construction), and Joe Reeve, Music Editor at Huh. Magazine; long-time school friends who share a passion for music, which only seems to grow stronger. We aim to share the music we admire with our readership and the generally the Internet, and hopefully, help some people get the recognition they deserve.
We were honoured to be approached to do a guest post for Hearing Gold; a site we have always admired and an exemplar in the blogging world. So in that spirit, we bring to you five of our favourite tracks so far of this young year, for your listening pleasure.
“Summer Nightrunner” is the title track from A Gap Between’s imminent EP, set for release on Nueva Forma in April or May. It’s a smooth and salutary Italo Disco track that we have been getting down to recently.
“Serenity” is a beautifully crafted, piano-based, instrumental electronic track from Dutch duo Änimal. The young producers are set to release an EP via VreshRecords, titled But First Of All, in April.
Another one coming from the UK now, this time from Nottingham based producer Comodo, with a track from his recent double A-side Havana/Float. It bares minimal electronic standard from last years incredible To The Sun EP. Both are available as a free download from his Bandcamp.
“Paper”, the b-side to recent single Pirate, is the first new recorded output from London-based Professor Penguin since the formation of the project with debut album Planes. “Paper” is a beautifully crafted song that builds to a bright and up-lifting chorus. The album finally gets released properly in April via Gentoo Recordings.
We have been huge fans of Niall, a.k.a. Only Real, for a while now. The mixture of smooth, bluesy guitar and spoken word vocals, indicative of his music as a whole, makes “Cadillac Girl” altogether unique and nostalgic. Be sure to check out his other sweet sounds over at his Soundcloud.
Again, we would like to thank Hearing Gold for the their hospitality. We hope you have enjoyed our vibes as much as we have enjoyed bringing them.
In case you missed this a few days ago, Portland’sA Gap Between released “Summer Nightrunner” for download and we’ve been spinning it since before finally deciding to put it up. “Summer Nightrunner” is a hauntingly beautiful piece that layers together wavering synth melodies and deep pounding synth beats. What really drives this one home though is the ghostly falsetto vocals that’s both haunting and stunning all at once. “Summer Runner” is the title track from A Gap Between’s upcoming EP so keep an eye out for that one.
Hearing Gold are proud to present our latest compilation, Midnight Cassette, a brand new releasewhich we’ve been working on with the collective effort of some of our favorite artists, producers, and bands. The concept of this compilation was to curate a collection of tracks to listen to while freely cruising the road on a long, introspective drive.
Delving deeper into the specifics of the theme, we decided to conceptualize the approach by descriptively submerging the participating artists and producers with the image of an ’80s Camaro SS passing by blurry neon city lights well into the cover of the night. However, that’s not to say that this is the exact setting that is required because these particular images are subjective and would be so for the artists and producers interpreting them, but more so, we wanted to elicit as closely as possible the aesthetics of an ’80s soft, haze-filtered pop and new wave vibe that mimicked the feeling of peaceful isolation when it’s just you, your car and your tape deck.
The resulting effort you hear before you is a simple vision that came into fruition through the talent of some really creative people. Thanks to all the amazing artists, producers, and bands who have taken the time out of their schedules to contribute an exclusive, original, and quality track for the compilation. Check out the tracklist and stream the entire compilation down below via Soundcloud and then head over to Bandcamp to grab the compilation in its entirety. (Tip: Listen to the compilation in its sequential order and enjoy!)

“Blaster” is Portland, Oregon’s A Gap Between’s smooth new track, a brilliant new gem produced by an unfaltering ear for chilled, lush tracks. Somehow, he also manages to seamlessly blend in a subtle flute note into the mix of slow hip-hop beats, deep bass lines and muted guitar riffs; it’s almost smoother than any tune currently being played at your local lounge. A Gap Between has an upcoming EP called Summer Nightrunner due out sometime soon so be sure to keep an eye out for that. In the meantime, grab “Blaster” below for your personal enjoyment.
