RICKY EAT ACID - (STAY)

Leave it up to Ricky Eat Acid to take a generously used Ashanti sample and flip it into something completely and utterly stunning. “(stay)” is the Ricky Eat Acid brand of ambient trance;the ambiance is hazily intangible yet the trance is effectively physical. It’s effortless to find yourself floating away to such a dreamy soundscape of delicate and light character. Yet another incredible ambient piece by Mr. Sam Ray. You can grab the track down below and head to Bandcamp for more sounds.

ART WEEK 2012

New label Unlimited Free Milkshakes co-run by Sam Ray (Ricky Eat Acid) just released their first compilation art week 2012 which is stacked with a lovely variety of lo-fi, ambient, noise-pop, and drone pieces in celebration of Sam’s 21st birthday. We’ve picked out a few of our favorites off the compilation here but sitting through the compilation in its entirety has a magic all on its own. Check out Blithe Field’s “Mistakes”, Little Boy Peeps’ “I wanna be an astronaut when I grow up”, and Wrassle Mania’s “Hate Fuckers” here and experience the rest of the fun over at Bandcamp.

GREMLINS - JONBENÉT

Gremlins have their self-titled EP up and “JonBenét” is another one of the tracks we’re digging from the release. The super group known as Gremlins is Katie Lee (Braids), Patrick Jeffords (Toro y Moi/Kid Trails), Sam Ray (Ricky Eat Acid), and Mat Cothran (Coma Cinema/Elvis Depressedly) who’ve teamed up to produce some oddball experimental pop deeply saturated in adequate noise, fuzz and angsty doldrums.

As with “JonBenét” there’s a sense of dichotomous action which places the playful music under a dark cloud of semi-morbid lyricism. Be sure to grab their EP over at Bandcamp and catch the new video for the track here.

HEARING GOLD’S HIGHLIGHTS OF 2011: TRACKS
When we started this blog late last year around this time, we weren’t able to follow and experience the abundance of releases that would emerge in those previous 12 months. This year, we’ve been able to follow the progression of musicianship, taking in the vast amount of music being produced and share them through the humble platform of our blog. Sitting at the end of the year, it seems as though the months (and the tracks) have flown by and the new year is ready to take over, but never lost are some of the tracks from this past year that have stuck with us. Reaching into a variety of tracks, here is an alphabetical list, and by no means is it exhaustive, of 20 notable tracks of 2011 that have either moved our feet, touched our hearts, or blown our minds here at Hearing Gold. As a note, our forthcoming lists highlighting our favorite EPs and LPs of 2011 contain numerous other notable tracks that have been excluded from this list, but will be found there instead.

RICKY EAT ACID - SPOOOOOKY

Nobody weaves soundscapes quite like Ricky Eat Acid, “Spoooooky” is yet another new track that appears on the awesome Crash Symbols compilation Dope Mountain Fuck Vol. 2 which was released yesterday. This blissful cut rings like a lullaby of hazy dreams with softly pounding beats to keep things from getting lost in the ambiguity of the foggy atmosphere. A dialogue sample embedded at the end sounds more real, yet void of context, remains just a fragment to that dream. Grab this beautiful track and then head to Crash SymbolsBandcamp to cop the rest of the compilation.

RICKY EAT ACID + ARRANGE - P.S.L.W.

“P.S.L.W” is a stunning collaboration between Ricky Eat Acid (aka Sam Ray) and Arrange (aka Malcom Lacey), a track that contains some seriously serene backing melodies. The way the piano notes hover and suspend weightlessly on top of ambient soundscapes while whispered sincere vocals kick in midway, we wouldn’t be suprised if you fall into some sort of serene trance while listening to it. We’ve said this to them both already, but for the record, this is one of the best collaborations from both of them ever. Be sure to grab it down below and check out more from Ricky Eat Acid and Arrange via Bandcamp for other releases from both.

RICKY EAT ACID - BIRDS

There’s a reason why Ricky Eat Acid continues to be one of our favorite ambient soundscapists around. Sam Ray seems to be the only one to tap into a kind of peaceful, intimate calm with his work. His newest effort, “Birds” is an apt example of these beautiful soundscapes and the track is rumored to possibly appear on a full-length Sam is working on—we couldn’t be more elated.

RICKY EAT ACID - APRIL FOUR

Ricky Eat Acid (a.k.a. Sam Ray) just released a batch of digital tracks scoring the rainy Spring month of April. A succession of some of the most beautiful soundscapes ever heard, the six tracks on April are an emotional lullaby soundtracking the silver liquid drops that kiss you as you walk past still pools of rain on the sidewalk. Sam drew inspiration from six old floral-themed postcards which he then scanned and used to represent each individual track. One of our favourites “April Four” and the rest of these ambient gems can be downloaded via Sam’s April Songs tumblr or on Bandcamp.
