GANGPLANS - LIKE WE NEVER HAVE (FEAT. STEFFALOO X PANDREAS)

Here’s the absolutely gorgeous piece “Like We Never Have” from production duo Gangplans. The producers, based out of Echo Park and Lake Arrowhead, take the lovely vocal samples from Steffaloo’s track “If You Were My Baby” and lay them over samples of Pandreas’ wonderful beat work. This collaborate effort has led to a track that vibrantly expels hope and energy and a beautiful soundtrack to self-reflection and of course, dancing. This is the first collaboration to be released from the production duo and can be found as part of the in-progress Alcapwned album over at Bandcamp.

DIAMOND MESSAGES - YOU WERE THE ONE

The always lovely Steffaloo just finished lending some sweet vocal work for Diamond Messages’ track “You Were The One”. Strumming away on the beach-side, surf-pop jam is Triptides’ own Glenn Brigman on guitar and Josh Menosh on bass. No surprise here, the melodies are fundamentally catchy and effortlessly dreamy as per usual. As for Steffaloo, well, she may be the only female vocalist that can blend gorgeously into any one song and never have anyone grow tired of hearing those smokey, sweet coos.

TOURS - LOW LIFE (FEAT. STEFFALOO)

There’s really no need to go into the specifics and explain the magic happening here. You’ve got the always impeccable production chops of Philadelphia’s Tours on the one hand, and on the other, you’ve got the queen of collabs Steffaloo delivering her usual effort of vocal prowess. It’s all pretty simple, it sounds real good, and the message is beautiful. Grab it over at Soundcloud.

CHROME SPARKS - SO FAR 2 GO (FEAT. STEFFALOO)

The new collab between Chrome Sparks and Steffaloo in “So Far 2 Go” is so good we couldn’t resist posting the pair’s collaborative efforts for the millionth time. Arguably their best yet, this new track is a bundle of sweet, joyful bliss delivered in the form of funky bass lines, layered synth melodies, playful percussion, and of course the sultry vocal stylings of Steffaloo. Plus, the intro and outro are brilliant. You can find this superb new jam via Portals’ new mixtape Mixtape #3: SXSW SAMPLER over at Bandcamp.

GERMANY GERMANY - DISCONNECT (FT. STEFFALOO)

Germany Germany just dropped “Disconnect” featuring Steffaloo once again on vocal duties and to no one’s surprise, it’s staggeringly beautiful as usual. Back from his short-term hiatus, Drew Harris of Germany Germany explains that his new outlook on his music will be that which comes from a wiser, more mature, pensive, and personal place. As is the case with his new track here, although it builds into an expansive electronic banger, a cathartic purge of emotions can be steadily felt throughout the piece. You can find this track on his forthcoming album Blank Mind Empty Heart. In the meantime, you can grab “Disconnect” down below or via Soundcloud.

BEAT CULTURE - BELONG (FT. STEFFALOO)

Our favorite 17 year-old producer Beat Culture releases “Belong” with Steffaloo on vocal duties and the resulting magic in this collaboration is almost implausible. As we’re all aware by now, with Beat Culture things sound better louder and denser; the buildup to the brilliantly overwhelming electronics completely submerge you into its center while graceful vocal samples provided by Steffaloo peek through its dense layers like a breath of fresh air.

You can find this amazing new track from our friends at LYFSTYL and their newly released compilation Dreams which features an abundance of other great producers and is available over at their Bandcamp.

HEARING GOLD’S HIGHLIGHTS OF 2011: EP’S
Here is a list arranged alphabetically, and by no means is it exhaustive, of 12 notable EP’s of 2011 that we consider to have been the most enjoyable, meaningful and on heavy rotation for us here at Hearing Gold this year. It was difficult to narrow it down to this list as we have many others we would love to include, but we’d prefer to keep things short and sweet this time around. As we have mentioned in Highlights of 2011: Tracks, most of these EP’s contain favorite tracks of ours which were previously excluded to avoid repetition. You can click on a cropped piece of the album artwork to play a selected track from the featured EP.

Beach Fossils - What a Pleasure released by Captured Tracks 03/08/11
For some reason or another, we were unsure whether to include this EP on this list or not, but after re-listening to the whole EP again, it only took a second to completely change our minds. What can we say, this EP is just good and Beach Fossils just do it right every single time.

The Bilinda Butchers - Regret. Love. Guilt. Dreams self-released 06/21/11
The title for The Bilinda Butchers’ stunning EP is like a self-contained story that unfolds as you listen to each track. The dream-pop sensibilities woven throughout this collective piece are awe-inspiring and the EP sounds like it could act as the soundtrack of those angst-filled years of a teenager’s life: Regret. Love. Guilt. Dreams. Perfection. This EP blew us out of the water.

Chad Valley - Equatorial Ultravox released by Cascine 06/20/11
This EP is chalk full of beautiful synth work and lush vocal melodies. Despite its attachment to the electronic genre which can sometimes be equated with dance music, listening to Equatorial Ultravox is like wrapping yourself in a warm, fuzzy blanket of Chad Valley-filled goodness.

Chrome Sparks - My <3 self-released 07/17/11
Ann Arbor definitely has something special in their drinking water. Case in point, the EP My <3 by Ann Arbor native Chrome Sparks is one of the most interesting electronic albums we’ve ever heard in a while. Featuring the lovely vocals of Steffaloo on two tracks, this EP is more than extremely lovable.

Dempsey - Dempsey self-released 09/15/11
The self-titled EP by Dempsey was our first introduction to the San Francisco duo and since landing upon it, we’ve found ourselves repeatedly listening to it more often than not. It was one of the most easy to listen to EPs within the chillwave genre which can sometimes lean towards being indistinctive but this EP stood out to us in a very good way.

Dreams - Feelings 4 U released by Absent Fever 10/17/11
Feelings 4 U is hands down one of our favourite releases through the amazing digital label Absent Fever. If we could sum up the EP into one phrase, we would say it’s one smooth piece of work filled with R&B flavours and samplings to make you move and groove and then some.

fthrsn - Hysteria released by Speaker Snacks Recs 10/05/11
fthrsn’s Hysteria is one of the more unique finds of the year with its unconventional pop and tropical infusions. This EP was a musical form of relief for us, offering a route of escape from the colder days of the winter months with its warm sounds and and ever-intoxicating vocal melodies.

Jensen Sportag - Pure Wet released by Cascine 15/02/11
Jensen Sportag are like the masters of disco-funk grooves. We’ve seen this through the countless remixes they have churned out this year where they have added their Jensen Sportag touch, from Madi Diaz’s “Down We Go” or Memory Tapes’ “Wait In The Dark” to name a few, and their very own Pure Wet EP which served as extension of this kind of sound that they are able to produce so well.

Keep Shelly in Athens - Our Own Dream released by Forest Family 11/08/11
We were very impressed with Keep Shelly in Athens’ EP In Love With Dusk released last year but the Greek duo have proven themselves once again in our eyes with the recent EP Our Own Dream which has have been making the rounds through the blogosphere this past year. We can only wait until next year for more releases from them.

Ski Lodge - Ski Lodge released by Dovecote 11/13/11
It’s no surprise that Ski Lodge hail from New York because their upbeat self-titled EP sounds like those late night rooftop parties with a gorgeous view of the surrounding city. Its surf-pop, guitar led melodies and catchy hooks made this infectious EP really enjoyable to listen to—just the right kind of vibes for the warmer months ahead in the new year where we will surely be keeping an eye out for more sounds to come from this project.

Slow Magic - ▲ self-released08/01/11
Slow Magic’s brief description for their EP is “sound made by an unknown imaginary friend” which is kind of the perfect way to sum it up—if you could translate the imagination of an impressively creative kid into music, it would sound like this. Magical and other-worldy is this EP from the mysterious producer who made a huge impression this year.

TV Girl - Benny and the Jetts self-released 09/27/11
TV Girl has got just the right amount of pop sensibilities without sounding overdone. Just take a listen to their EP Benny and the Jetts, a refreshingly upbeat curation of samples by the San Diego outfit that will lift your spirits even if you’re in a foul mood. Every time we take a listen to the EP, we are only led to be more and more impressed which is why we had to get them on here.

GRACIE X STEFFALOO - QUILTS

Rumbling bass lines never sounded so good in “Quilts” by Gracie and Steffaloo. In case you missed this, this would be Gracie’s first collaborative effort and who better to it with than the lovely seasoned collaboration queen Steffaloo. This track is an impressively produced chop suey of Steffaloo’s pitch-shifted vocal samples, an array of electronic effects, and running guitar riffs that all float above that super catchy rumbling bass line. Be sure to grab this excellent track down below and keep an eye out for Gracie’s forthcoming Treehouse EP set to drop via Small Plates Records.

CHROMES SPARKS - STILL SLEEPING (FEAT. STEFFALOO)

If Chrome Sparks and Steffaloo aren’t the best collaborators of all time, we don’t know who is. “Still Sleeping” is another collaborated effort between the two since their work on Chrome Sparks’ debut EP My <3, and now he’ll be releasing a new EP titled Surface Glows soon. “Still Sleeping” is as dreamy as it gets when twinkling electronics are led softly by Steffaloo’s always graceful vocal work. Definitely another one-of-a-kind track from these guys, so don’t forget to grab it down below and look for the new album soon. And it’s also just been given gold status, the second since we started the collection here! (Track premiered by Altered Zones)
